Check out WHYR’s new Wednesday evening lineup

Starting Wednesday, June 22nd, two new local music shows join Baton Rouge Community Radio.

Tune in at 6:00pm for High Cotton and Hill Country, a live program of classic Country and Western and Mississippi Delta blues. And stay with WHYR-LP at 7:00pm for The Front Porch, featuring the best in Americana and contemporary Alternative Country.

Your favorite Wednesday night programs haven’t gone away, though, they’ve just moved. The History of Rock with DJ Clay will now air 8:00-10:00pm. Nether Street will continue delivering underground music for the mind, at a new earlier time (by popular demand!) 10:00pm-12:00am. And Deep Wax with The Professor goes even deeper, midnight to 3:00am early Thursday mornings.

Check out the new Wednesday night schedule, and the great programming on Baton Rouge Community Radio all week, on the WHYR weekly programming calendar:

Louisiology investigates the history of the Baton Rouge Lakes and their Environmental status

In this Episode of Louisiology, Ben Branoff explores the history of the Baton Rouge lake system and its implications on the environmental quality of the area. Dr. Robert Gambrell, from the LSU Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, details his participation in a 1970’s lake restoration project in which contaminated sediments were detected and removed from the system. Dr. Xu, of the LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources, then explains some of his more recent research on the current quality of the lake surface water. Finally, Gwen Emick from Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful, explains her experience with the problem of litter in the lakes. As always, Louisiology focuses on science and this episode interplays the rich history of Louisiana’s musical heritage.

Get Involved In Community Radio

If you’ve listened to 96.9 on your radio dial in Baton Rouge, you’ve probably noticed that our signal is nowhere on par with WFMF, WYNK, or even KLSU.  That’s because we are a different kind of radio station.  We are a “low power FM” or LPFM station, for short.  We have 100 watts of power, similar to that of an old light bulb.  Like that light bulb, we want to use that 100 watts to illuminate, not just a room, but a whole community.

Baton Rouge Community Radio needs the community to succeed.

We aren’t talking about money, though that is always welcome.  (See the donation box on the side to help us get our internet stream running.)  We need your eyes.  We need to know what is great about Baton Rouge so we can share it with the rest of the city.  We need your ears.  We want to know the sounds around town that are undiscovered that should be shared with our city.  We need your voice.  We need you to help tell these stories, be it by recording interviews, connecting us with the people that you know, or hosting a show of your own.

We have this great canvas for the community.  Don’t let it go to waste. If you would like to have a show on WHYR, please send an e-mail to showproposal@whyr.org.  If you want to help out in other capacities, send us an e-mail to volunteer@whyr.org.
